Meet Dr. Henick

James H. Henick, MD

Double Board Certified Anesthesiologist & Interventional Pain Specialist

Dr. Henick brings a unique combination of professional experiences to his role as Interventional Pain Physician.  As an Air Force Colonel, Dr. Henick was the Chief Anesthesiologist at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, while simultaneously managing several academic appointments. Dr. Henick lent his services to aid in humanitarian efforts by leading Anesthesia Teams on surgical missions in the Dominican Republic and Ecuador. Dr. Henick’s training in anesthesia paved the way for his current focus on interventional pain management. Dr. Henick has called Hampton Roads his home since 2015 and is passionate about his role in helping patients effectively manage their pain.

Dr. Henick comes from a family of medical professionals. While working in anesthesia at a military center, he decided to pursue a path that allowed more personal contact with patients.

Dr. Henick’s board certification in anesthesiology is a unique and value-added skill benefitting both physicians and patients. In addition to extensive surgical experience, he is an expert on interventional pain relieving procedures of the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral areas. His extensive interventional experience includes Spinal Cord Stimulator placement, Radio Frequency Ablation, Stem Cell Therapy, Thoracic and Lumbar Kyphoplasty, and Ultrasound Guided Injection procedures. Dr. Henick’s approach to patient care is focused on the powerful premise of safe and effective treatments intended to optimize patient lifestyle.

A former skier and outdoor enthusiast, Dr. Henick can now be found chasing after his 4 children, all under the age of 10.

“It is my role to help patients return to the best version of themselves. No one needs to live with chronic pain. I can help minimize your discomfort and the need for medication. I employ only safe, efficient, and effective practices to optimize your lifestyle. Live your best life.” James H. Henick, M.D

Specialized Treatments

Dr. Henick specializes in Spinal Cord Stimulator trials for cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral pain conditions. Spinal Cord Stimulators provide an alternative to surgery. Patients receiving treatment can experience a drastic, if not complete, decrease in pain. A trial refers to the temporary placement of the device, not a treatment that is still in its trial phase. A patient who experiences relief during the trial can undergo official implantation, an outpatient procedure.

Boston Scientific designated Dr. Henick as the number one Spinal Cord Stimulator Trial implanter in Hampton Roads for the year 2017.

Dr. Henick has extensive experience in Radio Frequency Ablation procedures for cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral pain conditions. Frequently, these procedures can help alleviate painful conditions where other ‘steroid injections’ fail.

Dr. Henick is also an expert in Ultrasound Guided Injection Technique. This technique delivers injections directly to affected nerves versus injections that are done to a general area. The benefit to patients is immense, as the ultrasound allows for precision and accuracy during injection.

Dr. Henick has additional interventional pain training in thoracic and lumbar Kyphoplasty procedures. These procedures help patients with painful compression fractures and pain from spinal metastatic cancer spread.
