“My goal is to inform patients of their options and work with them to select the best treatment course for their needs.”

For Scott Clingan, honesty makes all the difference. As a physician assistant specializing in chronic pain management, Scott encourages his patients to be honest about the exact type, location and severity of their pain. In turn, Scott is better able to honestly assess and treat his patients, giving them a realistic idea of how and when they can expect their pain to improve.

After completing physician assistant studies with academic distinction at Wake Forest School of Medicine, Scott practiced as a physician assistant in Winston-Salem, NC, and was also involved as a sub-investigator in Phase II and III clinical trials, primarily for pain-related and anti-constipation medications. He was drawn to chronic pain management because of the multidisciplinary approach using interventional, pharmacologic, physical and psychotherapy, and even complementary and alternative treatment, alongside traditional surgical techniques to treat pain.

Most recently, Scott worked in health care administration, overseeing operations of a high-volume, multidisciplinary pain management center. But he missed the personal interaction of treating patients, which prompted his return to clinical medicine at SMOC.

Growing up on Tobacco Road in North Carolina, and having a father who coached college basketball, means Scott is a staunch supporter of college athletics. Since relocating to Hampton Roads, his family have become avid fans of Old Dominion University athletics. During his downtime, Scott enjoys taking his three boys to football and basketball games, and traveling with his family.
