Mako is a robotic-arm assisted technology that provides you with a personalized surgical plan based on your unique anatomy. A 3D model of your hip or knee will be used to pre-plan and assist your SMOC surgeon in performing total hip replacement or partial knee replacement.

MAKOplasty Hip Technology

MAKOplasty Total Hip Replacement

MAKO-RIO-Robotic-Arm1MAKOplasty can be used for Total Hip Replacement (THR), which is a procedure designed for patients who suffer from non-inflammatory or inflammatory degenerative joint disease of the hip.

The MAKOplasty technology provides your SMOC surgeon with a patient-specific 3-D model to pre-plan your hip replacement. During surgery, your SMOC surgeon guides the MAKO robotic-arm based on your patient-specific plan. This helps the surgeon to focus on removal of diseased bone, helping preserve healthy bone, and assists your surgeon in positioning the total hip implant based on your anatomy.

How It Works

1 Have a Plan Personalized for You

Ctscan 2169e7b102d745b2f8010cfbda2bb1bd6b69f0b5b9c2669e7af9d5bbb027866eIt all begins with an appointment at SMOC where we perform a CT scan of your joint. The scan results are used to generate a 3D virtual model of your unique anatomy. This virtual model is loaded into SMOC’s MAKO system software and is used to create your personalized pre-operative plan.

The MAKOplasty system also allows your SMOC surgeon to make adjustments to your plan during surgery as needed. When the surgeon prepares the bone for the implant, the MAKO system guides the surgeon within the pre-defined area and helps prevent the surgeon from moving outside the planned boundaries. This helps provide more accurate placement and alignment of your implant.

3 After Surgery

They will closely monitor your condition and progress. Your SMOC surgeon will review an x-ray of your new hip replacement with you, as well as your personalized post-op plan to get you back to the activities you love.

MAKOplasty Knee Technology

MAKOplasty Partial Knee Replacement

MAKO-RIO-Robotic-Arm1MAKOplasty can be used for partial knee replacement (PKR), which is a procedure designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis (OA) in one or two compartments of the knee. By selectively targeting the part of your knee damaged by OA, your surgeon can replace the diseased part of your knee while helping to spare the healthy bone and ligaments surrounding it.

The MAKOplasty technology provides your SMOC surgeon with a patient-specific 3-D model to pre-plan your partial knee replacement. During surgery, your SMOC surgeon guides the MAKO robotic-arm based on your patient-specific plan. This allows the surgeon to remove only the diseased bone, preserving healthy bone and soft tissue, and assists your surgeon in positioning the implant based on your anatomy.
