Press Release: (SMOC) Welcomes Dr. Geoffrey Wright to Suffolk Office
Navy veteran brings surgical expertise and experience to growing practice
SUFFOLK, Va., September 5, 2017 — Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center (SMOC), a leading orthopaedic center in Hampton Roads, today announced Geoffrey Wright, MD, will join the practice. Specializing in knee and hip replacements, Dr. Wright will also be bringing his expertise as a retired Navy captain and former flight surgeon to the growing SMOC care team.
In 2014, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) reported that more than seven million Americans are living with an artificial knee or hip. While this number illustrates a dramatic increase in these surgeries within the last decade, the study also indicates that younger adults (below the age of 65), are accounting for more and more of patients undergoing these procedures. The AAOS credits knee and hip operations with keeping a substantial part of the American population mobile.
“Dr. Wright provides the support his patients need to have a successful outcome,” said Todd Rauchenberger, Administrator at SMOC. “That support goes well beyond surgery. Advising patients on their treatment options and providing care post-operatively are critical aspects to a stand-out patient experience.”
Dr. Wright spent much of his military career at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, in Portsmouth, VA. There, Dr. Wright completed his residency and later served as a faculty member of the Orthopaedic Residency Program. As a young officer, Dr. Wright deployed as a Naval Flight Surgeon with the Marines. He completed his fellowship at at the prestigious Rush University in Chicago, IL.
“I understand the fear associated with giving your body and life over to someone else for surgery,” said Dr. Wright. “I tell my patients is that if they can give me six weeks -and just an hour and a half in surgery – they can feel better and get back to doing the things they love. My goal is to eliminate that pain so patients can get back to your life, and I look forward to joining SMOC, where it’s clear they share my values.”
